Burundi’s chief of staff of the Armed Forces, Prime Niyongabo in Luanda.

Luanda — Burundi’s chief of staff of the Armed Forces, Prime Nihongabo, Monday in Luanda described his country’s political situation as stable despite two incidents reported in two military barracks of the capital, Bujumbura. Prime Nihongabo was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the meeting of chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the member countries of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). The high ranking officer said that the incident was caused by citizens who demonstrated against the third term of the president Pierre Nkurunziza. He said that those citizens intend to disrupt the country structure, by contesting the mandate of a head of State who was democratically elected president. To this purpose, he said, the government has submitted a plan for dialogue with the opposition to tackle the existing conflict and ensure the stability and development of the country. Prime Nihongabo noted that all armed forces are fully united, with the exception of those who participated in coup attempt. According to him, the putschists have taken refuge to Rwanda from where they are preparing a rebellion to discredit the security of Burundi in the international community. The meeting of chiefs of Staff, which precedes that of ministers of Defence of ICGLR on Tuesday in Luanda, is chaired by the Army gen. Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).
